Today we are going to discuss about the long hair secrets of Indian Women. Being an Indian, I have seen lots of Indian women with long, black and thick hair from my childhood. Myself, as a 12 year kiddo had a waist length long black hair :P but after that, I was getting my hair cut done once every 6 months as I couldn't manage my long hair. My hair has a great ability to grow long fast, which is of course gifted by my mom who has knee length hair. I asked her about her long her secrets and she revealed few today morning. That's what I am sharing with you all in this post. Nowadays, me too actually very curious about growing long hair and hence hereafter no CUT expect the 8-weeks-once split ends trims. Come let us move on to the post!
Oiling and Moisturizing:
Have you noticed most of the Indian women? Especially south Indian? They swear by virgin coconut oil. They oil their hair almost everyday to maintain moisture balance of the hair. In today's world, no one is ready to step out with oil in their hair (Including me!) due to the limp, thin and sticky look it gives. We want our hair to be soft, flying and grease-free to make it comfortable for different hair styles. But most of the traditional women in India (like my amma) still oil their hair everyday and get a plaited hair style done. This locks the moisture in their hair and prevents hair breakage due to dryness. Though it is a myth that virgin coconut oil helps in faster hair growth, it can actually help you get long hair faster. Got confused? Let me clear it. By applying coconut oil on your scalp, you are preventing hair and scalp dryness, split ends, frizz and such. Hence, your hair stays healthy without any troubles. Dry hair is more prone to hair breakage than well moisturized hair. Then guess! If you leave your hair dry everyday, if it keeps on breaking, how would you get long hair? Your hair grows only 6 inches per year but if keeps on breaking and falling everyday, then how lng hair? But in Indian women's case, their hair breakage is less and hence the hair grows long without any disturbance or difficulties. This give them beautiful long black hair in a shorter time when compared to others who don't oil or moisturize their hair regularly. You can also use olive oil, apricot or almond oil for moisturizing your hair if you are not okay with the coconut oil.
Frequency of Hair Wash:
Hair wash frequency matters a lot in maintaining a healthy hair. If you want long hair, you MUST be following all the necessary rules to maintain your hair healthy and this is the only way you can achieve longer and stronger hair in a short time. Washing hair often stripes away the excess moisture from your hair and scalp, and leave them dry. My mom takes head bath only twice a week whereas I do it everyday :D But she said that one of her best long hair secrets is maintaining her hair wash routine only twice a week. By this, her scalp is prevented from any dryness and mainly, that itchy dandruff. In case if you are not comfortable with twice-a-week hair wash routine, wash your hair in alternate days but not everyday. And also make sure to wear a cap/scarf over your hair if you are stepping out in the sun. Sun severely damages your healthy hair if not protected.
Healthy Food Habits:
My mom swears by dates, curry leaves chutney and greens to grow long hair. She has been taking this diet from her teen-hood. Having soaked fenugreek with curd every morning in empty stomach also results in strong, shiny hair, she says. Include nuts, dates, fish and Vitamin B rich good items in your daily diet to ensure that you are following a proper way to grow long hair. You can also get a biotin capsule everyday consulting your physician to prevent excess hair loss or hair fall. I myself experienced less hair fall with the consumption of biotin.
Comb & Detangle Twice a Day
Combing and de-tangling hair twice a day ensures better blood circulation in the scalp, resulting in healthy lustrous hair outside. My mom suggests to comb hair with a wide toothed comb, especially after oiling hair. But be sure to give gentle pressures on the scalp and do not over do hair combing. Wash your hair brush/comb everyday in soap water and use it on your hair. Never ever use others comb on your hair and the same goes the the pillow, hair accessories etc. By this, you can prevent unwanted hair problems such as dandruff etc. You can also massage your hair roots and scalp with your palm and finger tips to improve blood circulation in your scalp.
No Shampoo! Only Shikakai
Still, in rural areas of India, women only use Shikakai to cleanse and wash their hair. Shikakai is a natural hair wash powder made of several natural herbs to cleanse and protect hair. From her childhood, my mom used to wash her hair with Shikakai only. This hair wash powder can be prepared at home easily without making any hole in your pocket and moreover it doesn't contain loads of SLS, parabens and silicons unlike many store bought shampoos. 'Where there are no chemicals, all you will be having is a healthy, damage-free hair.' Right? So Shikakai is definitely one of the top secret of Indian women's long beautiful hair. Skip your shampoos for sometimes and get some Shika for your hair!

Weekend Fun Giveaway July Week 2 Giveaway Entry #4
Hiee!! You can call me a late bloomer!! What I mean to say is that I got introduced to the fascinating world of skin care, hair care and makeup very recently.:) I am a software engineer from Mumbai but now based in Chennai. I spend a considerable amount of my time in office looking at beauty blogs and that's when I came across this blog ;). I love the fact that you review goodies which are affordable and the tips you give me are quite useful. I love writing and its been a long time since I wrote something apart from software codes!! I also love animals (be it fluffy, four legged or 3 legged). This is my 1st article on anything related to beauty and hope you all like it!!
Given the stressful lives we all live nowadays, I am not surprised to see everybody complaining of 1 thing! Yes, I am talking about hair loss. The crowning glory on which we, not just women but men too nowadays, spend a lot of time taking care of. I live in a humid city where no matter how many times I wash my face, I start looking like an overflowing oil can. I find time to wash my face but not my hair often (Yes you can imagine its state then!!!). So here are certain things I follow to ensure that I don’t end up looking like Mogambo ( if you havn’t seen Mr India , go watch it)
- First and foremost, never comb wet hair. It’s something we all do when we are pressed for time (guilty). But wet hair equals fragile hair which easily tends to break. Let it dry naturally.
- Always use a wide toothed comb. People say its difficult to comb with it but trust me. It’s easier than it looks.
- Towel drying is another issue. Picture this. A piece of cloth being washed on the stone by beating it repeatedly on the stone. Now replace the stone with your hair. Get it? Just gently rub the towel on your hair.
- ALWAYS COVER your hair with something when you travel. Use old dupattas.
- Use shampoos which do not have SLS, SLES and parabens.
- Do not use conditioner every time you shampoo. Restrict it to once a week or 2.
- Essential oils like Rosemary, Clary Sage and Basil are very good for combating hair fall. Add a couple of drops to coconut, olive or almond oil and apply it to your scalp. Worked wonders for me!!
- Do not tie up your hair too tightly. It makes hair vulnerable. Also gives a headache.
- Every night comb your hair atleast once to remove knots.
- AND THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL- Do not stress too much about hair fall. You stress, your hair stresses. It’s a vicious cycle.
I hope these small tips help you guys. Stay stress free and have a good hair day!!

Greying has also happened in multiples, which is quite viewable. I hardly gets time to care for my hair, every 15days i do henna & I use every alternate day VLCC Shampoo, but it doesn't affect a lot, my hair got thin & now I am planning to have my hair cut first & then to take care of my hair, so that I can get my healthy hair just like before, pls let me know what can I use & how to use. Kindly help me.
MABH Answers..
Hi Parmita. Post pregnancy hair falls happen due to harmone imbalance. First of all, you need to talk to your doctor. Taking B complex, Biotin, Zinc, C & E Vitamin supplements help a lot in controlling hair fall and maintaining good hair health. Consult your physician before deciding to take these supplements. Hot Oil treatments help a lot when it comes to thinning of hair because it improves the blood circular in scalp and promotes hair growth. Mix equal parts coconut oil, castor oil and olive oil. For 100 ml of this oil mixture, poke 4-5 Vitamin E Capsules (Evion is a good brand of Vitamin E and it is widely available) to extract the oil. Pour this vitamin E oil to the already prepared oil mixture and store it in an old hair oil container. Heat this oil and massage your scalp with this once to twice a week for faster results. Adding dried curry leaf powder and tulsi powder to this oil doubles the benefits. Soaking dried Amla fruits in your regular hair oil and using it regularly helps control gray hair. Adding curry leaves in your daily diet also helps in darkening of gray hairs. If you have more split ends and thin hair, you can trim them for an inch and continue your hair care regime, so that it would help in maintaining good hair but don't trim more, simple is enough.
Secret tip from my mom:
Eat 5-10 dates and curry leaves gravy everyday!! This was my mom's secret tip to maintain long, healthy hair. Read more tips of her for hair care here
Use a mild herbals shampoo to cleanse your hair once in 3-4 days and never ever wash hair frequently as it would cause moisture loss. Add egg whites, spinach, curry leaves and carrots in your daily diet to achieve healthy hair. Last but not the least, leave stress and have a nice Good "Night" sleep. Remember sleeping in night is more important to maintain good health and beauty. All the best for your beautiful hair. Hope you will write back to us about the improvement in coming months. Take care Parmoita :)
